Last updated: 5 November 2026 (moved to whatsmydog.app; the diary now saves results by itself; several dogs)
Everything happens on your iPhone. Nothing you photograph, film or record is sent anywhere, and the app has no server to send it to.
What the app looks at, and where
- Camera and photos. Images and video you take or pick are analysed on your iPhone with Apple's built-in Vision framework. They are not uploaded.
- Faces. When you scan a face, the app reads expression and setting (for example a smile, or being outdoors) for that one match. It does not identify anyone and does not build a face profile.
- Microphone. The app listens only while you hold the listen button on the Saying tab. The sound is analysed on your iPhone with Apple's built-in sound classifier and the recording is discarded.
What stays on your phone
Your dog diary
The app keeps a diary on your phone of what it found, and adds each result by itself:
- dog twin results, with the twin card picture (which includes the photo you used, of a dog or a face);
- bark readings: the kind of noise, how many barks and how loud, but never the sound itself;
- thinking sessions and thoughts you hold: the moods seen and a still from that moment;
- your own entries: the photos, words and events you add, and which of your dogs each one is about.
Sound recordings and videos are not kept. The diary is stored in the app's own storage, left out of iCloud and device backups, and never sent anywhere. Delete any entry, or the whole diary, in the diary tab. Deleting the app removes it too.
Your answers and your dogs
Your answers to the first-run questions, and the names, ages and photos of the dogs you add, are kept in the app on your phone so the app can use them. None of this is ever sent anywhere. Deleting the app removes it.
Older test versions
Test versions before 0.4.0 could save posture session logs (and video, if turned on) inside the app on your phone, excluded from backups. Deleting the app removes them.
Subscriptions
Purchases go through Apple's App Store. We never see your payment details, name or Apple Account. The app only asks your phone whether a subscription is active.
What we do not do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No analytics, tracking, advertising or third-party SDKs.
- No selling or sharing of data, because there is none to share.
Sharing
When you tap share, the card goes wherever you choose through the standard iOS share sheet. Once shared, it is covered by the privacy policy of the app or person you sent it to. The QR code on a card links to the app's App Store page and carries nothing about you.
This website
whatsmydog.app is a plain website with no cookies, no analytics scripts and no forms. It is served by Cloudflare, which processes standard request data such as IP addresses to deliver the pages and protect the site.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes
If the app ever starts collecting data, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the date above will change.
